Sodastream - Reservations (album)

'Reservations' is the 4th album of a quietly impressive 10 year career that has seen delicate Australian duo Sodastream play with bands such as Low, Yo La Tengo, Lambchop and Mountain Goats. Many reviewers have likened Sodastream to Belle & Sebastian, but that comparison doesn’t sit too well with me. Although there are hints of B&S and even The Delgados on this record – these hints lack the compulsive lyrical quirkiness of said bands – instead offering clues of their winsome, low-key introspective sides instead. A better comparison would be: a downbeat blend of Nick Drake and Kings of Convenience, with splashes of Damien Rice.

Make no mistake this album is maudlin – bordering on gloomy, but it is also an

album that reveals more and more of its hushed charms with each listen. Like I said earlier: quietly impressive. 7/10
