Hot Chip
Made In The Dark
EMI Records

With critically acclaimed 2nd album ‘The Warning’ completely done and dusted, and ‘Over and Over’ worn out beyond belief, Hot Chip start again.

And start again they do. Opening track ‘Out at the Pictures’ starts promisingly enough. With its simplicity comes its effectiveness; a feature Hot Chip struggle to keep a hold of in some parts of this album. ‘Shake A Fist’ sees Hot Chip become almost a bit arrogant as it breaks down completely two minutes in and has some utterly cringe-worthy spoken word.

However, call me a hypocrite, it’s very difficult to criticise Hot Chip. They are still more original than most mainstream British bands at this time, and this album contains moments just as good as ‘The Warning’. Such as the sudden change in direction on ‘We’re Looking for a Lot of Love’, transforming from giddy to forlorn.

Also, title-track ‘Made in the Dark’ is absolutely gorgeous and, ironically, the least electronic song on the album. It is a complete step away from the Hot Chip we know with soothing piano and a laid back vibe that wouldn’t feel out of place at a jazz club. It is the highlight of the album.

This album sees Hot Chip become warm and beautiful but doesn’t shy away from their love for electro pop.
Hot Chip have always been a band that are better to see live than to merely hear them. This album will gain them few new friends, but will re-iterate to fans and critics their importance to British music today.
